How Big Money in Politics Blocked U.S. Action on Climate Change

In politics, no piece of carbon dioxide regulation legislation has managed to get very far because of the fossil fuel industry artillery. There stand the sentinels of the fossil fuel industry threatening politicians with political extermination if they dare to budge using big money.big money politics

One Republican senator observed that you look at fossil fuel-funded front groups that are threatening your elimination as a political figure on the one side, and you look over at the other side, and everybody is just sort of standing around looking at the ceiling tiles. Nobody is saying to you, “Look, you got to do the right thing here.

When it came to climate change legislation there was a floodgate of corporate political contributions, much of it in the form of “dark money” whose origins do not have to be disclosed.

To begin with, the Obama-era pledge made under the Paris agreement to cut emissions 26 percent to 28 percent below 2005 levels. It appears that United States has not been on track to meet the Obama-era pledge anyway for 15 percent of global emissions.

In announcing his decision to withdraw from the Paris accord, President Trump cast it as a matter of putting America first. Trump praised a study showing that the economy would be plunged into darkness if forced to meet Obama’s pledge—a scenario that few, today, take seriously.

Making cost-effective cuts in the emissions that cause climate change is firmly in America’s self-interest and the interest of the whole world crisis

The documentary, a Climate of Change relies on the expert insights of several revered scientists to debunk the skepticism of global warming deniers. Each scientists concurs that further catastrophe can be avoided if our species is willing to take the appropriate steps to act.

The climate change movement has suffered in part by the inactivity of a younger generation that feels overwhelmed and consumed by daily struggles, and helpless in their ability to affect change within such a far-reaching crisis.

It’s not enough to know the problem: you must also know how you can be a part of the solution.

Real Limits to Growth

What are the Real Limits to Growth?

Limits to Growth was published in 1972, and its assorted charts and graphs made remarkably real that, as the authors of that book put it at the time, “If the present growth trends in world population, industrialization, pollution, food production, and resource depletion continue unchanged, the limits to growth on this planet will be reached sometime within the next one hundred years. The most probable result will be a rather sudden and uncontrollable decline in both population and industrial capacity.”

The scenarios, which are called World3, showed how population growth and natural resource use interacted to impose limits to industrial growth, a novel and even controversial idea at the time.

Though Limits to Growth was the biggest-selling environmental book of all time, with 30 million copies sold — it wasn’t enough to divert our trajectory. People convinced themselves the limits to growth were far enough away they’d be someone else’s problem.

Real Limits to Growth

In 1992, this was no longer true. On the 20th anniversary of the publication of Limits to Growth, the team updated its book called Beyond the Limits. Already in the 1990s there was compelling evidence that humanity was moving deeper into unsustainable territory. Beyond the Limit argued that in many areas we had “overshot” our limits, or expanded our demands on the planet’s resources and sinks beyond what could be sustained over time.

The new book proved to be accurate on many of the basic trend extrapolations: the gap between rich and poor has only grown wider in the past three decades. Thirty years ago, it seemed unimaginable that humanity could expand its numbers and economy so soon to alter the Earth’s natural systems.Real Limits to Growth

The most common criticisms of the original World3 model were that it underestimates the power of technology. But even with the most effective technologies and the greatest economic resilience that seems possible, this model generated scenarios of collapse because of a shortage of resources:

  • The most obvious limit on food production is land. Millions of acres of cultivated land are being degraded by processes such as soil erosion and salinization, while the cultivated area remains roughly constant.
  • Only one-fifth of the planet’s original forest cover remains in large tracts of undisturbed natural forests. Although forest cover in temperate areas is stable, tropical forest area is plummeting
  • Another limit to food production is water. Per capita water withdrawals are going down because of environmental problems, rising costs, or scarcity.
  • Another limit to growth is today’s world population of 7.2 billion. Can you believe 9 billion people predicted in 2050 , when it was only 4 billion people in 1974, the year of the first Skylab? How coincidental is the hockey stick graph of both population and carbon emissions.Real Limits to Growth
  • More than 80 percent of year 2000 commercial energy use comes from non- renewable fossil fuels—oil, natural gas, and coal. The underground stocks of fossil fuels are going continuously and inexorably down. The stock of reserves is finite and non-renewable; the peak for oil production will occur within the next decade.
  • If an eventual nine billion people on earth all consumed materials at the rate of the average American, world steel production would need to rise by a factor of five, copper by a factor of eight, and aluminum by a factor of nine.
Real Limits to Growth
Real Limits to Growth

From source to sink, the processing, fabricating, handling, and use of materials leaves a trail of pollution. Look at the prediction for pollution on the graph above: it is right off the chart beginning right now. Imagine the cost to bring this back to normal.

So it is predicted that  industrial output begins to decline around 2040 because the rising expense of protecting the population from starvation, pollution, erosion, and resource shortage cuts into the capital available for growth.

The fundamental problem arises because society’s implicit goals are to exploit nature, enrich the elites, and ignore the long term. As a result, society will develop technologies and markets that destroy the environment, widen the gap between rich and poor, and Real Limits to Growthoptimize for short-term gain. In short, society develops technologies and markets that hasten a collapse instead of preventing it. NEGATIVE CARBON EMISSIONS

THE FOLLY OF ‘MAGICAL SOLUTIONS’

But there is barely any public discussion of how to bring about the extra “negative emissions” needed to reduce the stock of CO2

Global levels of carbon emissions have skyrocketed in recent decades. Global emissions from all human activities will reach an all-time record 45 billion tons in 2017, following a projected 2% rise in burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, the study revealed.

Sixty years ago, the world spewed only 9.2 billion tons per year.

TWO years ago the world pledged to keep global warming “well below” 2°C hotter than pre-industrial times. Climate scientists and campaigners purred. Politicians patted themselves on the backbiochar solutions

Setting unattainable emissions targets is not a policy — it’s an act of wishful thinking!

A focus on magical solutions leaves little room for the practical. When policy debate detaches from reality, up can become down in a hurry. For climate policy to succeed, it must move beyond magical solutions to those that actually work.

SWEDEN’S parliament passed a law which obliges the country to have “no net emissions” of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by 2045. It demands that remaining carbon sources are offset with new carbon sinks. In other words greenhouse gases will need to be extracted from the air.

NEGATIVE-EMISSIONS TECHNOLOGY (NET)

What they don’t tell you about climate change

Stopping the flow of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is not enough. It has to be sucked out, too

No scenarios are at all likely to keep warming under 1.5ºC without greenhouse-gas removal.NEGATIVE CARBON EMISSIONS

Climate scientists have been discussing negative-emissions technologies (NETs) with economists and policy wonks since the 1990s. But so far politicians have largely ignored the issue, preferring to focus on curbing current flows of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. NETs were conspicuous by their absence from the agenda of the annual UN climate jamboree which ended in Bonn on November 17, 2017.

Even the less speculative technologies need investment right away. Trees take decades to reach their carbon-sucking potential, so large-scale planting needs to start soon,

To have any hope of doing so, preparations for large-scale extraction ought to begin in the 2020s.

Modelers favor NETs that use plants because they are a tried and true technology. Reforesting logged areas or “afforesting” previously treeless ones presents no great technical challenges.

The problem with forestation and CCS is that the plants involved need a huge amount of land. The area estimated ranges from 3.2m square kilometers (roughly the size of India) to as much as 9.7m square kilometers (roughly the size of Canada). That is the equivalent of between 23% and 68% of the world’s arable land.

Any tree parts left over after lumber and paper-making processes can be dumped into landfills or into disused open cast mines. The carbon fixed by the biological processes which formed the trees could thus be sequestered underground.

THE BIOCHAR SOLUTION OVERLOOKEDbiochar solutions

In the same way, biochar can be produced, which helps soils absorb and retain more carbon instead of allowing it to dissipate into the air. The biochar system would be incorporated in the tree nursery project in Africa.

Globally, the commonly accepted biochar application rate is 1 to 5 tons per hectare of direct biochar application. This translates to a biochar compost application annual rate of about 2 to 10 tons per hectare.

According to researcher Bruno Glaser at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, a hectare of meter-deep terra preta can hold 250 tons of carbon, as opposed to 100 tons of carbon in unimproved soils.

THAT MEANS THAT THERE IS A POTENTIAL  OF 150 TONS OF CARBON CAPTURE/ HA POSSIBLE. (THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE FORESTATION ON THE SAME HECTARE)

In addition, the bio-char itself increases soil fertility, which allows farmers to grow more plants, which allows more bio-char to be added to the soil. Johannes Lehman, author of Amazonian Dark Earths, claims that combining bio-char and bio-fuels could draw down 9.5 billion tons per year, or 35 Gt CO2 per year equal to all our current fossil fuel emissions.NEGATIVE CARBON EMISSIONS

SUSTAINABLE BIOCHAR AND GLOBAL WARMING

MASSIVE REFORESTATION

To demonstrate the effectiveness of massive reforestation, the Black Death in the 1300’s and the catastrophic effects of European diseases on Native American populations resulted in massive reforestation of large parts of the world and contributed to the “little ice age”.

Living Water MicroFinance Inc. can arrange your partnership with an African landlord (who provides a long term lease) and a woman farmer and her family who will manage the 2.5 acre (1 Hectare) farm,  which  produces 560 fruit and nut trees and 560 tons of CO2 emission capture, which is sequestered over 25 years. Add 150 tons of CO2 emission capture from biochar farming. That adds up to over 700 tons/ha of CO2 emission capture.

Removing 8bn-10bn tons by 2050, as the more sanguine scenarios envisage will require 143,000 km² @ 700tons/ha. which is 5% of India.biochar solutions

Combining bio-char and bio-fuels could draw down 9.5 billion tons per year, or 35 Gt CO2 per year (@ 150 tons/ha of CO2 emission capture).

Add to this the 560 tons/ha of CO2 emission capture from orchard trees over 25 years. This will raise the potential to  35 billion tons per year.

SEVEN BILLION TREES

So far there are only 17 CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) programs big enough to dispose of around 1m tons of carbon dioxide a year. Promoting CCS is an uphill struggle, mainly because it doubles the cost of energy from the dirty power plants whose flues it scrubs.

NEGATIVE THINKING

In 2011 a review by the American Physical Society put extraction costs above $600 per ton, compared with an average estimate of $60-250 per ton for CCS. Removing 8bn-10bn tons by 2050, as the more sanguine scenarios envisage, let alone the 35bn-40bn tons in more pessimistic ones, will be a vast undertaking. For all low-carbon technologies, it puts the figure at $65bn a year until 2050. A chunk of this fund must go toward NET.

One way to create a market for NETs would be for governments to put a price on carbon. Take Norway, which in 1991 told oil firms drilling in the North Sea to capture carbon dioxide from their operations or pay up. This cost is now around $50 per ton emitted.

EVERYTHING AND THE CARBON SINK

Wind power is profitable today as a result of decades of government investment in the United States and Europe. Nobody knows how to get rich simply by removing greenhouse gases. When the need is great, the science is nascent and commercial incentives are missing, the task falls to government and private foundations. But they are falling short.

Subsidies are another option. Without them, renewables would have taken longer to compete with fossil fuels. Governments could offer a reward for every ton of CO2 that is extracted and stored. In theory such a bounty should be paid from a fund bankrolled by countries according to their cumulative historical emissions (top comes America followed by Europe, with China rapidly closing the gap). In practice no mechanism exists to get them to cough up.

Earlier this year Britain’s government became the first to set aside some cash specifically for NETs research. In October America’s Department of Energy announced a series of grants for “novel and enabling” carbon-capture technologies, some of which could help in the development of schemes for direct air capture.

Richard Branson, a British tycoon, has offered $25m to whoever first comes up with a “commercially viable design” that would remove 1bn tonnes of greenhouse gases a year for ten years. Mr Branson’s prize has gone unclaimed for a decade.

The fossil-fuel industry says it is committed to the technology. Total, a French oil giant, has promised to spend a tenth of its $600m research budget on CCS and related technologies. A group of oil majors says it will spend up to $500m on similar projects between now and 2027. But the field’s slow progress to date hardly encourages optimism. Governments’ commitment to CCS has historically proved fickle.

CLIMATE economists refer to it as “the most important number you’ve never heard of”. The social cost of carbon (SCC) tries to capture the cost of an additional ton of carbon-dioxide pollution in a single number—around $47 in present dollars. Using it, more than $1trn worth of benefits has been calculated in economic-impact assessments that accompany environmental regulations. But the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under President Trump has developed a new calculations place it anywhere between $1 and $6—a cut of between 87% and 98%.

Secrets of the Super Rich

The Panama Papers: Secrets of the Super Rich

The international news media have been preoccupied by a new financial scandal as of late and the secrets of the super rich. Their stories focus around the Panama Papers, a set of leaked documents which reveal the identities of over 200,000 companies, trusts, foundations, criminals, world leaders, and other figures of wealth and influence who keep great sums of their money hidden in offshore accounts. Calling upon the talents of highly skilled investigative journalists across the world, the new documentary, The Panama Papers, probes the contents of these documents in an effort to unravel a complex tapestry of suspicious financial activity.

Secrets Super Rich

These 11 million documents all originate from a single source: Mossack Fonseca, or MossFon for short, a Panamanian-based corporate law firm that provides convenient tax havens for the wealthiest entities across the globe. While some of their clients operate within the boundaries of the law and utilize the company’s services for legitimate purposes, many others do not. Offenders include Rami Makhlouf, the richest man in Syria and a chief financial backer of the oppressive Assad regime, and Marlorry Chacon Rossell, a high-profile Guatemalan cocaine trafficker. Mobsters, money launderers, arms dealers, terrorist enablers and other wealthy criminals work with MossFon to set up dummy companies as a shelter from public scrutiny. This allowed them to continue their operations without the fear of leaving a traceable money trail.

The realm of politics also plays a key role in the scandal. World leaders are counted among MossFon’s most notable clientele, including the Prime Ministers of Iceland and Saudi Arabia.

To what extent is MossFon aware of their client’s criminal activities and motives, and at what point is the firm itself veering into illegality? That’s one of the central points of contention explored in the documentary, and it’s a dilemma that has few easy or concrete answers

The Panama Papers were not a leak like Wiki Leaks. It was an illegal hack of selected information handed to 300 “journalists” if you could even call them that. United States involvement was not really revealed: the dirty secrets of western corporations still remain unpublished.

WHY SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED?

GREED FATAL DESIRE

According to the United Nations Development Program, the 20 percent of the world’s people who lived in the wealthiest nations had 30 times the per capita income of the 20 percent who lived in the poorest nations. By 1995 the average income ratio between the richest and poorest 20 percent had increased from 30:1 to 82:1.

WHY SO MUCH EVIL?

Why so much evil?

WHY SO MUCH EVIL IN THE WORLD?

So many incurably ill people in hospitals, so many handicapped children, so many human lives completely denied ordinary happiness on this earth.  There is so much evil in the world. Why Evil?

How to continue to trust in a God who is supposed to be a merciful Father, when suffering, injustice, sickness, and death seem to dominate the larger history of the world as well as our smaller daily lives?

How could God have permitted so many wars, concentration camps, the Holocaust?

Why, then, hasn’t He eliminated-and does He persist in not eliminating-suffering in the world He created?

God created man as rational and free, thereby placing Himself under man’s judgment. His wisdom and omnipotence are placed, by free choice, at the service of creation.

There is also the intervention of the evil spirit, who, with even greater shrewdness than man.

WHY DOES GOD TOLERATE SUFFERING?

Evil exists because freedom exists. We are free to do what we want and some people choose to do evil for various reasons. It could all start with one person doing evil which affects other people and could lead to them also doing evil. If there is evil in the world then it is because of us humans.

A lot of simple things that God talked about like greed, jealousy, selfishness and whatever, could all lead to us doing evil deeds.

Children wouldn’t have to starve in Africa if we all chose to do good. We definitely have the money and resources to heal the world but the people who have the most money and power are greedy and instead of doing what is right and use the money for good, they use it for themselves. We think we know best all the time. If we had just been good and obeyed God we would not have this kind of trouble.

God taught us to be loving, be generous and all these positive things that show love and affection. If we all did these things then we wouldn’t have such big problems in the world because it would all be love.

Don’t blame God for the evil in the world. Look at yourself and make a change for the better. God gave us the freedom and responsibility, but because he knew what was best for us he also gave us advice on what we should do to live a better life, but sometimes we ignore the advice, thinking that we know better, and then we end up in a world full of evil and blame God when it is our own faults.

We brought these issues on ourselves.

god proof

God is Love and precisely for this He gave His Son, to reveal Himself completely as Love. This happened exactly as prophet Isaiah affirmed: “It was our infirmities that he bore, /We had all gone astray like sheep, / each following his own way; / But the Lord laid upon him / the guilt of us all”                                                                                 Isaiah 53:4-6.

It is the revelation not only that God is Love but also the One who “pours out love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit” Romans 5:5.

God proof

In our world today humanity is pushing God away. He is like a dim light. Humanity appears to be walking in darkness; it is losing its bearing.  There is a deep spiritual battle going on between the World of Light and the World of Darkness:  “For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 God does have an antidote: the Love of God. 1 John 4:7-21

In the end, the spiritual man will have the advantage over the man who sets himself up as an unbending judge of God’s actions. Continue reading WHY SO MUCH EVIL?

The World Problem

World Problem

–Bertrand Russell

THE WORLD PROBLEM

The World Bank estimates that the world problem is that a quarter of the world is chronically under nourished. It is shocking to know that this problem has been with us for centuries. This problem seems too remote for most people. Hunger continues to initiate the most violent wars. People who are out of work and are starving are the stuff of which dictatorships are made. Yet, no one truly desires anyone to suffer or starve.

A Meaningful Existence

Most of us live for tomorrow: it will be better, richer, wiser and more secure. We are all searching for something that will make our existence more meaningful. Even the ancient Egyptians believed that upon death they would have to answer two questions: “Did you bring joy?” and “Did you find joy?” We truly have an obligation to be the best person that we can. Any new learning, which will aid us in obtaining that goal, will benefit  everyone. Each of us has something special to contribute. There is something that each of us can do if we are willing. Finding ways to become involved is a good beginning. We can use the time that we are given to give birth to our potential — our human trademark. We are challenged  to see new possibilities. We are living at a time of abundant new beginnings.  It is actually exciting when people come to grips with their own uniqueness as individuals. We are constantly told that nothing is free and that every investment has to have a return. Yet, over 50% of people volunteer their time at something to improve society.

An Earthly Paradise

The Buddhist tell a story of the frog lodged at the bottom of the well, which cannot  ever understand the limitless expanse of the sky. If we can only step out of our own perceptual traps, we can begin to see the beauty and goodness. An earthly paradise is not some far-off impossible destination. It can be a loving voyage in the here and now. We are responsible for creating our own paradise and the time to start the voyage is NOW.

The Save-the-World Mind Set

We are living through a period of an unprecedented social and technological change.  This rapid advancement in technology and human networks have exponentially opened up new pathways to actualizing one’s passions. People want to broadcast and express themselves and even cultivate a following. There is an increased global awareness and connections to others in remote areas. Many people do not associate helping the poor around the world as a calling from God. They think that Christianity is a laundry list of vague beliefs that have little meaning on how they spend their time. Actually, they lack a deep understanding of their faith and that following Jesus is a way of life.. Many people aspire to science-related careers. Some people assume that science has cornered the world on knowledge: things are only true when they are tested with scientific methods. There is a name for this: scientism. This thinking must not become more important than obedience to God. Here is what Sir Isaac Newton said about his belief: ” I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by those who were inspired. I study the Bible daily.” He credited his Creator with the existence of the universe. Each moment has a life upon itself with as much potential for joy and happiness as we are willing to bring to it: life is wonderful; joy is our birthright and love is what it is all about.

Love

Having more of anything other than the love for God and neighbor will leave you dissatisfied with relationships and possessions. To love is the greatest of human experience and sooner or later we discover that life without it is empty and meaningless. Love is always worth the effort. Kindness in giving creates love. Each of us bears a torch but we must keep it lit. The hope of tomorrow is that these blazing torches will provide hope for tomorrow. We want to leave the world a better place for our having to be in it.

To Build a Team

Today people don’t want to be only hearers of faith but also doers — to put feet to their faith: action on behalf of others. This is empathy: the ability to understand and take on yourself the burden of others to serve and restore God’s world. God has made all things and He is making all things new for you. So what has God called you to do in partnership with the community of Christ-followers?              How can you be on a mission in the world for Christ, based on what you are gifted to do?

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN?

god proof

  • Christians don’t shout, “I am clean living!” They whisper “I was lost, but now I’m found and forgiven.”
  • Christians don’t speak of this with pride. They confess that they stumble and need Christ to be their guide.
  • Christians don’t say,” I’m strong.” They say they are trying to be strong because they are really weak and need strength.
  • Christians don’t brag of success, but they admit that they are failing and they need God to clean up the mess.
  • Christians don’t claim to be perfect. Their flaws are far too visible but God believes they are worth it.
  • Christians still feel the sting of pain and they have their share of headaches but they call upon His Name.
  • Christians are not holier than thou. They are also simple sinners who receive God’s Unbelievable Grace.

jesus god

 Christianity on a Table Napkin:

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

The real Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. He was send by God to come to the earth in the body of a human being. That was so that He could suffer in the flesh, take all our sins upon Himself and die in our place. He rose from the dead and lives to pray for us daily.
He is the Saviour – The angel announced to Mary; …and you shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21    It means He has the power to free us, save us and deliver us from sin. He is merciful and has the power to forgive. He brings good news to the poor, heals the heartbroken, announce freedom to all captives, pardons all prisoners. He comforts mourners. He has healing in His wings.
If you are not yet received Jesus as your Saviour… SAY: Lord Jesus, You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Please hear me today and help me! I want to receive you as my Lord and Saviour. Be Lord of my life!  Lord Jesus, I believe that You died for me and that God raised You from the dead. Forgive me all my sins and take all my sins away. Come into my heart and be my Saviour and Lord, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Amen

God the Father will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain. We will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is The Holy Spirit will have made all things new. Eternal joy will have begun.  “For the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is His name.”                                       Luke 1: 49

Are we not like Barabbas justly condemned for murder, but saved by the innocent Jesus on the cross? Are we not like the adulterous woman, deserving of death by stoning, to whom Jesus says, “I do not condemn you”?  And Jesus saved them both. In fact, Jesus came to earth specifically to look for and save those who were lost.

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD.

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;

though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.    Isaiah 1:18
